As we close out 2018 and head towards 2019, you are going to start hearing the words “core values”. What exactly are “core values”? According to one source, core values are defined this way “Core values are the fundamental beliefs of a person or organization. These guiding principles dictate behavior and can help people understand the difference between right and wrong. Core values also help companies to determine if they are on the right path and fulfilling their goals by creating an unwavering guide”. At Guaranty we have 14 core values, we call them 8+6. Now 14 seems like a lot, but they are really very easy to remember, and they are a blend of the old and the new, a combination of guiding principles and unwavering guidelines.
First the old:
By now almost all of you have been given a copy of our founder’s last business cards, and on the back of those cards are the 8. They were unwavering guides that our founder Herb Nill used to live his entire life, here they are:
GUE – Get Up Early
SIS – Stay in Shape
WID – Write It Down
PTP – Pay The Price
EEW – Everyone Else is Wrong
DWYA – Do What You Agree
L – Listen
C – Communicate
Now the new:
These new guiding principles are those that guide our decision making, and help us determine right from wrong when we are at a decision point., here are the 6:
Treat everyone with:
Courtesy
Dignity
Respect
And
Don’t lie
Don’t steal
Don’t cheat
8 + 6, I want each of you to commit these to memory, so that at some point when I ask, and I will, you can repeat them, but repeating them isn’t enough, we need to live and breathe them every day.
Have a great day everyone and a very Merry Christmas.
